Why Wedding Rings Are Worn

The Meaning of the Wedding Ring

Marriage is an act undertaken by two people to be happy together for a lifetime and to form a family. Being a family means love, it means passion, it means loyalty and trust. All these concepts are represented by a single thing; the wedding ring. Couples preparing to marry formalize their love with this ring they wear on their fingers. While this ring was designed in a simple and classic line in the past, today it has started to be designed in a more bright, eye-catching, and elegant way.

History

The most distinctive feature of the wedding ring, also called the marriage ring, is that it symbolizes love and loyalty. This ring, which is known to have been first used by Egyptian Pharaohs, is round to signify eternity. A man and a woman promise to be together forever by getting married. The ring they wear is an indicator of the promise made and its concrete manifestation. The round ring with two open ends represents two doors. The first of these doors is the beginning of marriage, and the last door is death. Couples vow not to separate unless death parts them and wear this ring on their fingers. The evolution of the wedding ring is also important in showing the significance attributed to the ring. Initially made from tree branches, the ring eventually began to be made from precious metals over time. The ring, initially made of copper and brass, started to be made of iron in Ancient Rome. As iron represented strength, the ring made from this metal also began to represent power. Later, precious metals such as silver, platinum, and gold started to be used. Today, gold wedding rings are commonly used.
